Flower stick

Flowerstick

Flowerstick is a 50-70 cm long stick that is covered in rubber, silicone, plastic, or something of the like. The ends of the stick are fringed weights which look like flowers, hence the name. Flower stick is thrown or spun with two guiding wands. Similar to another kind of stick, known as a devilstick. Devilstick differs from the flowerstick in that it is a bit conical in shape, thinner in the middle than on the ends, nor does it have the tasseled flowers on the ends. It is usually heavier and more slippery. Flowerstick is usually slower and therefore easier. There are flowerstick models available which are rather fast. Generally, shorter sticks are faster. Some practice freely with both the flower and devilsticks, while others specialize in one in particular. Both have their own characteristics and overall feel; spinning them is complete different. A beginner might want to begin with a slower and easier flowerstick set.

History

Different juggling equipment (balls, cones, flower stick, devil stick, kiwido, diabolo, poi...) have been popular for thousands of years. Clowns have entertained sad kings and village fairs have been a traditional place for showcasing and performing. Many fighters and mind controllers have used the equipment to learn mind control tactics. The writer believes that even neanderthals used flowersticks as for calming purposes.

Uses

Studies have shown that all kinds of juggling and hand (kikkailu?) brings technical and creative function in the brain together. This is incredibly important for congenital development. Flowerstick is a freestyle meditative practice which
-improves coordination
-increases concentration
-develops patience
-relieves stress
-solidifies self-confidence
-quickens reflexes
-builds muscle
-improves circulation
-burns calories
-brings joy to the juggler and the surrounding
-brings a creative skill

This list could go on and on. In any case, flowerstick is fun and innocent activity which can be practiced alone or in a group. Nowadays, many schools are adding juggling practices to the program to prevent hyper-active and restless behavior.
